Donnie was born into the Heston family of Emmanuel, West Virginia, a family tied for generations to the occult, the law, old Appalachian obligations, and the long shadow of the Old Hunger. The Hestons are not a pure sacred bloodline or a chosen dynasty. Their inheritance is uglier and more human than that: people kept choosing to stay, marry in, fight, serve, defend, and carry the burden even when nothing cosmic promised they were good.His mother, Alma Heston, was the blood Heston: a powerful, musically gifted, spiritually significant figure in Emmanuel. His father, Pierce, was a Southeast Asian immigrant who married into the Heston world and name. Donnie grows from both inheritances: Appalachian Heston obligation and immigrant-family selfhood, old house and outside blood, inherited power and chosen belonging.As a kid and teenager, Donnie already had the instinct that would define him: if someone vulnerable was in danger, he moved. Not always wisely. Not always legally. He once stole a motorcycle to stop a cult kidnapping a girl, then came home to be lovingly, terrifyingly scolded by his mother, Alma. Before he became the patient, calculating lawyer version of himself, the heroic impulse was already there: someone is being taken; stop it.He was also an athlete, a high-school running back, but even there his personality showed. He was not a pure power runner or glory-chasing superstar. He played with patience, like his idol and Steelers legend Le’Veon Bell, he waited behind the line, read the field, scanned for the gap, then cut through when the opening appeared. That became his whole life pattern. Donnie’s body learned early what his lawyering and magic would later refine: don’t force the lane too early. Read. Wait. Strike clean.Alma’s death, and the ordinary cruelty of cancer, shapes him deeply. In a universe where death can sometimes be negotiated, reversed, cheated, or ritualized, cancer remains horrifyingly mundane. It does not care about Heston magic, legal argument, or family myth. Donnie learns that not every enemy can be out-argued, out-spelled, or beaten into narrative shape. Some losses are just losses. That grief grounds him.His chosen vocation is law, specifically defense. Donnie becomes a panel attorney at both the state and federal level — a lawyer appointed by courts to represent indigent clients at while maintaining his own practice. He chooses to stand between poor, accused, vulnerable, hated, or discarded people and the machinery of the state.
POWERS
Like many other magic users in the universe, there is no one, systemic explanation for Donnie Heston's powers. And maybe that is the point. Magic, according to the Hestons, is a reminder that there will always be things that humanity, even with all of its advancements, could never understand. A mirror that shows us just how small and insignificant we are in the face of the ever-expanding, ever-splitting universe.There are, however, disciplines of magic that the Hestons are historically proficient at. Each member of the family would naturally gravitate to one discipline over the other according to who they are in terms of personality.For Donnie, the disciplines he is proficient in are as follows:
1. Arguing
To most people, Arguing is simply reality warping. Often defined as the power to manipulate phenomena or concepts to achieve various kinds of effects. Donnie, though, would reject this definition. Instead, he would say that his entire body is in a constant dialogue with Reality and that his powers are simply him submitting his arguments against it. A simple argument would require little to no movement. For example, if someone shoots a gun at him and he wanted to argue that the bullet should turn into bubbles, all he had to do was flick his wrist. However, let's say he was fighting in the rain and wish to argue that not only should each raindrop turn into shards of glass, it should also fly towards the enemy in rapid speed, he would need more movements.Because, unlike most other mages in the universe, there is a relational aspect to his powers. Which means that Reality could say, "No."When that happens, Donnie will try one of two things: argue harder or try a simpler argument.If Reality keeps saying no, that's where the other disciplines come in.
2. Spellcasting
Spellcasting, by nature, is the exact opposite, or Arguing. Instead of petitioning that the universe does something or accept a premise, Spellcasting uses a magic user's energy to insist themselves upon the universe. Donnie hates this. Using a direct spell at somebody else feels like violating the boundaries of his oldest friend, Reality.So, whenever he has to resort to Spellcasting, he mostly uses it in a defensive manner; generating shields he could use to block attacks. At most, he'll create whips and restrains to buy him time until he could Argue again.
3. Rituals
Like other magic users in the universe, the Hestons have passed down rituals from generation to generation; all of which to ensure that their descendants could prepare themselves against any and all supernatural threats; but most of all from their oldest foe, the Old Hunger.
4. Martial Arts
The Hestons realized early on that there needs to be a way to channel their magic and/or Argue that does not involve them talking. Because in the Blue Ridge Mountains, talking is what gets you killed.That's why, throughout the centuries, the family have developed their own martial arts style. Inspired and suited for the rugged Appalachian that they hailed from, this martial arts discipline prioritizes direct, impactful hits with the occasional sweeping motions.This is the means through which Donnie argues. The motions of his body are him submitting and, if approved, executing the argument.
